Parenting Amazing Teens

Parenting teens is so different than parenting young children. When you mess up, they’re usually aware and may call you out on it! It can be a  humbling experience. Many parents look forward to these years, thinking its so much easier. Some things are certainly easier, but many things are not. Even though you spend so much time preparing them for young adulthood, once it finally arrives, it can be just as overwhelming as it is rewarding.

I know everyone says they have the best kids ever, but seriously, I do! My girls are 12 and 14. They’re funny, smart, talented, and very thoughtful young teens. My girlies (yes, they are still my girlies!) work and play hard. For years, I kept their activities somewhat limited and gave them plenty of time to “just be kids”.  This school year, we are trying something new. I caved agreed that they could try out for performing dance teams. At school, they participate in competitive show choir, but LOVE dancing and REALLY wanted to do this. We made a plan, prioritized and went full speed ahead! We are on the go, unlike anything we’ve experienced before. I have become a bus driver! (Yes, a bus driver. If I were a taxi or Uber driver, that provided daily meal service between stops and on-time delivery, I would get tips!) Its a big transition, but we are working though it.

One secret of maintaining a full schedule, besides getting a good night’s sleep, is to keep your body hydrated and fueled throughout the day. I am packing bigger lunches and bigger snacks. They need more food to keep them going throughout the day. This week, while grocery shopping, I came across a new item that I decided to try. Yoplait Go Big! It’s a bigger sized yogurt snack in a convenient pouch for tweens and teens! We always say, “Go Big or Go Home!” so how could I NOT bring this home? I picked up a couple of boxes and brought them to dance class and they were a big hit! The Yoplait Go Big pouch is different than other yogurt packaging,  you just grip, rip & go. Also great as a snack during their break time at school.

I tell my daughters how great they are, but when they have to stop and read the words, the words stick.

My Sweet Girlies,

Becoming a parent was the most challenging, yet rewarding, experience of my life. I had no idea what I was doing, but I listened carefully to a wide variety of tips and advice, but in the end, I decided to follow my heart and my gut. This is one of the best decisions I ever made! It has paved the way for me to give you the most important things I can ever give you – love, guidance, and the knowledge that I will always be there for you, no matter what.

Parenting isn’t easy. I have learned that you’re both so similar, yet so very different. A big part of the challenge was learning that though I have very similar hopes, dreams and expectations for both of you, the bottom line is that I embrace who you are, individually. I don’t compare the two of you, but I do expect the same three very important things from you: 1. Always be honest, 2. Always be kind & fair, and 3. Be the best “You” that you can be. This advice can really make a difference through your teens, and beyond. Though these things were expected of me when I was young, no one came out and said it to me like this. I really believe this is something all teens should be reminded of regularly.

It is so amazing to see how you’re blossoming into the most extraordinary young women I know. I couldn’t be more proud of you. You both have accomplished more in 12-14 years than I had in at least 25! I never had the opportunity or courage to try so many new things and I am just in awe! It takes a lot to get up in front of large groups to speak, to sing, to act, to dance and it doesn’t phase either of you! That couldn’t be more opposite of me! You have hearts of gold, strong values, and are full of compassion for others. Another thing I truly admire is how you both are so genuinely thankful when you receive anything, whether its dinner, a gift, a compliment or an encouraging word. All of the hard work, practice and dedication you have is continually paying off and I can’t wait to see where it all takes you. The sky’s the limit girlies! Of the many days I feel like I am not cutting it as a good mom, I just look at you guys and remind myself that I must be doing something right!

Smooches!

Life is busy and many times we don’t make the time to say the little things to our kids. The little things that mean a lot! I have partnered with Yoplait Go Big to encourage all of you to write a letter to your teens & tweens, letting them know why you think they’re so amazing! Yoplait will select 3 teens/tweens and showcase their amazing stories. Head over to the Yoplait Go Big Facebook Page for more details about how you can enter!

It really is the little things that mean so much and that you remember for years afterwards. They sound like such sweet girls. I wrote a letter to my own son too for the same reasons!
