Reduce Mildew and Soap Scum In The Shower

I dread cleaning the bathroom. Scrubbing off the mildew is almost as bad and trying to get hard water spots off your glass shower doors! It takes forever to scrub the grout and get rid of the mildew unless you maintain it daily! (who has time for that?) That white chalky film on your shower tiles feel rough and dirty.  Worse yet, is the pink, yellow or black gunk in the corners.  Here is a little secret on how to significantly reduce mildew and soap scum in your shower (and hopefully eliminate it too).

Avoid this!

The point of this post is not how to clean the mildew and soap scum, but how to reduce or prevent it from accumulating in the first place. You’ll need to start with a clean surface. After you scrub down your tub/shower, then try this!

Early in our marriage I remember seeing my husband use furniture polish on the tile in the shower.  I thought it was really odd, but he explained that it was a little Marine Corp trick to keep their showers shining bright for their inspections.  Once you scrubbed down the tiles, you spray some furniture polish into a rag (OVER YOUR BATHROOM SINK) and wipe down the walls.  Then buff with a soft, dry towel. This leaves a sleek and shiny finish.  Soap scum will not accumulate as before and the water would bead right off.  It also creates a barrier to help prevent mildew from forming.

WARNING – It is important to apply the furniture polish into the rag and not spray directly on the interior wall of the shower.  The mist can easily settle on the floor of your tub/shower making it very slippery. Now I haven’t tried it myself, but I’ve been told that you could also use lemon oil or even dryer sheets to get the same result.
I have also seen a recipe to make your own DIY furniture polish.  It is a 2:1 ratio of olive oil and lemon juice. I’ve been meaning to try it, but I forgot all about it until I was writing this post.  When I do, I will give you the verdict.

Now that your tile is clean and pretty, what about those hard water spots on your faucets? HERE is how I remove mine!

Have you tried this method? If not, how do you reduce mildew and soap scum in the shower? Let me know in the comments!

This looks so good!!! Seriously need to try this!!
I have used Hydrogen peroxide at killing molds as it has the components of anti-bacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal and much safer mold cleaner as opposed to bleach because it does not generate toxic residue or toxic fumes that hurt the environment.

    Thanks and Keep sharing.
