5 Simple TIPs To Tame Frizzy Hair

March 6, 2014   |   1 Comment

These 5 simple tips to tame frizzy hair have been a life-saver for my wild mane! I lived in a very dry climate for many years. It wasn’t until I relocated that I was reacquainted with “FRIZZERY”! Yes, that is when Frizz meets Misery. I had to learn how to care for my hair all over again.  I use these {simple} TIPs which have really helped me to tame my frizz.

1. Use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner!
It really does make a difference. Don’t be fooled by shampoos that claim to give you sleek, straight hair. In my opinion, they are perfect for those who already have straight hair or maybe a slight natural wave. But if you have any curl to your hair, and are prone to frizz, they will not give you the results your hope for. If you’re on a budget, you don’t have to spend a fortune on your shampoo either. I use L’Oreal EverSleek Intense Smoothing Shampoo. I pay under $7 at either Target or Ulta.  I follow this with L’Oreal EverPure Moisturizing Conditioner, which is both Color Protecting and Sulfate-Free. Once I switched, I started really noticing a difference in my hair after about 1 week.

2. Do NOT use a towel to wrap or dry your hair.
Never, ever! After relocating during a humid summer, I immediately started reading anything I could find about controlling frizz. I read in more than one place that using a towel on your hair can actually increase frizz. The texture of the towel can easily disrupt the cuticle layer of your hair or split the ends, which contributes to frizz. I use a soft,  old t-shirt. After I wring out my hair, I wrap it in a t-shirt until I am ready to begin drying it.

3. Completely dry your hair!

Some swear by air-drying your hair. I say don’t. If there’s humidity in the air, my hair frizzes up twice as much. But if you do, the more you touch it, the worse it gets. Avoid running your fingers through damp hair & wait until its completely dry!

One mistake I made for the longest time was that I pinned my hair up and started blow drying from the bottom layer up. A hair dresser told me that you need to seal the hair cuticle as quickly as possible, so work from the top down. If you notice, your hair dresser likely dries your hair this way, mine does. When blowdrying, make sure you blow the heat down the hair shaft, from root to end. Remove the air from the ends of hair as you pull the brush through.

Make sure it is completely dry. Leaving the underside damp will only spread the moisture to the rest of your hair, allowing the frizz to start spreading.

4. Less is More. Don’t wash your hair every day.

If you have drier hair, this is especially important. But if your hair is oily, I would suggest trying a dry shampoo and skip a day. The dry shampoo absorbs oil and has provided me a little extra volume.  If I’m not doing anything strenuous, then I will only wash my hair 2-3 times a week. My hair is dry enough that I can go that long without washing. If you wash it too often, you will strip it of the natural oils, which can be taming. Your hair is likely to become more dry, therefore increasing the chance of frizz.

5. Protect your hair.

Use styling products on your hair. Not only can it help to tame the frizz, but it can also protect it from heat tools. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on hair products. Do your research and shop around.

I use argan oil to help tame my frizz. I was introduced to Moroccan Oil a couple of years ago, and while I suppose its great for some, it did nothing for me. I spent $14 on less than 1 ounce. I now use Argan Magic, which is was $9.99 for 3.75 ounces or HSI Professional Argan Oil, which is $18.99 for 2 oz. It really is my top pick, but either will offer a good result.

For thermal protection, I recently discovered Redken Duo Shield 07. I applied this product to my hair after the argan oil to blow dry. I would also use this if I were using a flat iron or curling iron.

Finally, I use Redken Outshine Anti-frizz Polishing Milk to my dry ends. Sometimes I apply it before I blow dry, and sometimes I use a tiny bit to smooth over my hair right after I’m done styling.

TIP – Always check the clearance aisle at you local Beauty Supply Store. When a company changes the design on their packaging, very often the older packaged products are put on clearance. Recently I purchased the Outshine and Duo Shine for 50% off!
