Here are 8 dangerous foods for dogs that can lead to significant health risks. It is important to educate family members, especially children, about why its not really a good idea to sneak food to your pup under the table!
Chocolate – The chemical in chocolate which is toxic to canines is called theobromide. It can damage a dog’s central nervous system, heart, lungs and kidneys. Cocoa powder Baker’s and dark chocolates are more toxic than milk chocolate, but all varieties are dangerous.
Dairy Products – many dogs don’t have enough lactose enzymes to effectively break down dairy products. This often leads to diarrhea.
Grapes (and Raisins) – contain a toxin that can effect a dog’s kidney function. Can result in kidney damage and possibly lead to kidney failure.
Onions – contain sulfoxides and disulfides which damage red blood cells and can cause anemia in dogs. Garlic can be equally as toxic to dogs.
Nutmeg – The oil in nutmeg can cause damage to a dog’s central nervous system.
Nuts(especially Macadamia) – have toxins that can effect the digestive system, nervous system, and muscles of a dog.
Xylitol – An artificial sweetener can cause a variety of symptoms in dogs, including vomiting, disorientation and seizures. Ingesting foods containing xylitol may cause a severe drop in blood sugar levels, resulting in liver failure.
Yeast/Dough – if ingested, the dough may rise in the stomach, placing pressure on the diaphragm, causing difficulty in breathing. Can also rupture stomach and/or bowel when expanded.
