Has anyone else bought this large bag of salad at Costco? Its a good deal. $2 for 3 pounds of salad. The grocery store sells the small bag for about $4. My biggest struggle has been that it turned brown before I could use enough of it. I seal it tightly with little air as possible inside.
I was griping about this to my mom because I had to throw away 2 bags in a row, barely used. She said my problem was that I put my hand inside the bag when making a salad. The explanation I got was that even though my hands were washed, I was still cross contaminating the contents of the bag.
So I tried it. I cut the bag open and simply poured out the desired amount, never touching the inside of the bag. Then I gently squeezed out the air, twisted tightly and sealed with one of those Pampered Chef bag clips. FIVE days later, lettuce is perfect! No brown! I’m on my second bag since learning of this TIP and its working! I’m so happy! We eat alot of salad. The kiddos aren’t big fans of sandwiches lately, so they ask for salad and chicken in their lunch boxes.
TIP Tested – SUCCESS! (No more mid-week trips to the store to buy more salad!)

The idea is to keep the air and moisture out. If you put a doubled paper towel in the bottom of the bag, pour the excess greens back in and then seal it tight, it will stay green longer. If you have a head of lettuce, wash it, cut out the core, let it drain, wrap it in paper towels or a clean dish towel and wrap it in a plastic bag, it will keep for a really long time. check out gracieotripp
