You know when you are wishing for Perfect Rice, but you get one big sticky lump instead? Well I finally discovered a secret to help prevent my rice from sticking and I’m SO glad I did!
At least a month ago, there was a conversation on Facebook about cooking rice. I’m pretty sure was a thread on Bakes In Slippers and I can’t remember if it was about cooking rice or rice cookers, but there was mention of a “towel method”. I inquired and googled it and found that some people place a towel over the rice when done to prevent it from getting sticky. I couldn’t wait to try it. Now I don’t have a fancy rice cooker. When I make rice, its the conventional in the pot way, or I will admit that I do have a microwave rice cooker that I end up using when I make rice during the week. Most of the time, the rice comes out of the microwave cooker pretty sticky, so I decided to try the “towel method” with it.
I think I bought this for under $10 a LONG time ago. Its very simple. 2 cups of rice, 3 cups of water or broth and cook for 14 minutes. Thats it.
So I cooked my rice, and 14 minutes later, I removed it from the microwave, took off the two-piece lid and placed a folded dish towel over the rice. Then I tightly wedged the lid back on as tightly as I could.
I let it sit for at least 15-20 minutes. Half way, the covered portion of the towel was pretty damp, so I recovered it with a dry end of the same towel. In the end, I fluffed the rice in bowl with a fork and here is my result!
Perfect Rice!
My rice was NOT STICKY! I was really pleased with the results! When you allow cooked rice to sit, as directed, the moisture from the steam settles back down on the rice, which makes it sticky. Since the moisture was now absorbing into the towel, it kept the rice from getting wet and starchy. Next time I will cook the rice on the stove top and try out this “towel method”. I can’t wait!

This is interesting and I will definitely try it. We eat a lot of rice in our house and when I use Uncle Ben’s long grain rice I never have a problem…never. But if I use any other brand (which I do because I mostly shop at Aldi’s) my rice is mushier. I’m excited to try this method! Thanks for the post! (found you on Foodie Friday)

Thank you Denise! I often just buy store brand, and it happens a lot. I have noticed that sometimes I have better luck when I buy jasmine rice, but I haven’t paid attention to whether it was brand specific. Hope you have a great weekend!
