Do you get overwhelmed with the amount of candy your kiddos bring home on Halloween? Last year we had two large sacks filled to the brim. It was more then twice the amount I bought to give out. I’m guessing we had more than 10lbs of candy. More sugar than anyone needs to have in one house. Or three.
I had a friend that would wait a few days and throw it all away. Someone else would bring it to the office. I even knew of a dental office that would buy it back from their patients and send it to the troops. I thought this was a great idea, but we moved away and I’m just not proactive enough to organize something like that myself. Then last year, I had a great idea!
I went through the sacks and removed all the plain chocolate, Nestle Crunch, Mr Goodbar, Special Dark, Rolos and Peanut Butter Cups and I hid them in the FREEZER! Not for my own stash, but for BAKING! We love mix-ins when we make brownies or cookies, so I picked out anything I could picture in a baked good. I can’t tell you how handy this was for spur of the moment baking! I will usually keep the candy in paper lunch sacks, fold them up, then put them in a freezer bag.
The kiddos happily helped me sort and package it up because they understood that we were “preserving” it for a future treat!
