There are so many health benefits in eating Greek yogurt. Just a few years ago, you had search for Greek yogurt. Not only is it in every store now, but you have several to choose from.
Here are just a few:
- Higher protein than regular plain yogurt (18-20g vs 8g)
- Lower sodium than regular plain yogurt (75mg vs 120mg)
- Lower cholesterol (10g vs 20g)
*Based on a 6 oz serving
Greek yogurt is thicker and more creamy than regular yogurt because it is strained more. It also is great for cooking because it does not curdle when heated. My family has been eating Greek yogurt in place of sour cream for the last 3 years and had absolutely no idea until about a month ago. If you don’t know (or care) its difficult to tell the difference. There are many different brands out there. Check your labels! You’ll find that some brands do fall short in the protein content. My personal favorite is Fage. Its high in protein and you can typically get a large container for a great price at Costco.
Replace it with Greek Yogurt!
When cooking and baking, you can use Greek yogurt in place of butter, oil, cream cheese, and mayonnaise. There is a great 3 ingredient Cake recipe using Greek yogurt. Its so {simple} and delicious! I also use Greek yogurt in banana bread, onion dip, enchiladas, chicken salad, and even used it to make a healthier version of Alfredo Sauce.
Here is a guide for substitution:
- 1 Cup Greek Yogurt = 1 Cup Mayonnaise
- 1 Cup Greek Yogurt = 1 Block of Cream Cheese
- 1 Cup Greek Yogurt = 1 Cup Sour Cream
- 3/4 Cup Greek Yogurt = 1 Cup Oil
- 1/4 Cup Greek Yogurt and 1 Stick Butter = 2 Sticks Butter (1 Cup)
- 3/4 Cup Greek Yogurt and 1/4 Cup Milk = 1 Cup Buttermilk
So the next time you bake, replace it with Greek yogurt. You won’t be sorry!
